Stained Glass Techniques We Use

From her studio in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland, Ann Marie creates her stained glass using a variety of techniques.

Traditional Stained Glass With Lead - View Image
Traditional stained glass with lead uses coloured glass cut to the shape required for the pattern, mounted on lead rods which are later welded and patinated. This technique was used for the great medieval cathedrals. Its strength and flexibility, which resists the passage of time, is appropriate to modern homes.

Tiffany's Stained Glass Technique - View Image
Tiffany's stained glass technique makes use of adhesive copper ribbon set round precut glass pieces; the whole piece is then made rigid by hot cast tin on copper. This technique is most suitable for objects in three dimensions as well as small flat panels. The rigidity of the unit lends itself to this technique particularly well.

There are imitations which use adhesive ribbons and painted motifs on glass; some are quite pretty. Unfortunately most of them are achieved through the use of debatable techniques.
